Tulip Festival 4/28/2012 |
 |
The Town of Babylon has always been associated with
tulips. Many areas that our parishioners now live in were once
tulip farms. In fact the property the parish sits on was owned by
the
Van Bourgondien family. Many of them are still are very much
involved in raising tulips and other flowers. Some have moved to
Long Island's north-fork, others to Virginia and elsewhere. There is
still a Van Bourgondien's
Nursery on Deer Park Avenue in Dix Hills.
In the 1950's the town hosted a tulip festival each year which
included parades with bands
and floats and the crowning of the Tulip Festival Queen. On April
28, 2012 we're planning to recreate these Tulip Festivals. The day
will kick-off with a parade starting at the West Babylon Jr. High School
and ending at the church's newly installed
Xeriscape Prayer
Garden for its dedication. Then, our impartial judges, (the sisters
living in our convent), will confer awards to the best float, best band,
and best group in the parade. The day will offer food, games,
vendors, tours of the Church & the Van Bourgondien house plus much more.
Don't miss out on a day of good old fashioned fun! See you there.
