CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

“The social values of our faith are expressed in papal letters, encyclicals, and council documents as well as the Scriptures and writings of our early church fathers.  Together, these documents make up the body of Catholic Social Teaching….”

Catholic Social Teaching requires us to promote and defend human life and dignity; a call rooted in the understanding that every human life is sacred and created in the image of God.  According to Pope Benedict XVI, “Catholics have the right and the duty to recall society to a deeper understanding of human life and to the responsibility of everyone in this regard.”  (DN3) This duty requires us to build the essential conditions for a culture of life, to end affronts to human life such as poverty, abortion, torture, and war, and ensure freedom and opportunity for all.  It is deeply interwoven with our broader obligation to promote the common good of all humanity.”

Seven Key Themes of Catholic Social Teaching

  1. Life and Dignity of the Human Person

  2. Call to Family, Community, and Participation

  3. Rights and Responsibilities – to One Another, Families, and Society

  4. Prioritizing the Needs of the Poor and Vulnerable

  5. The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

  6. Solidarity with all Humanity, Regardless of National, Racial, Ethnic, and Ideological differences

  7. Care of God’s Creation.

You May Be Eligible For Food Stamp Program

Only 65% of those eligible for Food Stamps participated in 2005.  If the National participation rate rose just 5%, 1.9 million more low-income people could spend an additional $1.3 billion on healthy foods.  Check with Catholic Charities Nutrition Outreach – 631-789-9546.

Old Computers, TVs, Electronic Games, Toxic Products?

Residents of the Town of Babylon can bring “E-WASTE” to the town recycling center at 57 Field Street, West Babylon Monday through Friday from 8 am – noon and from 1 pm to 2:30 pm.

Parking for the Disabled

Limited parking close to a building is provided to allow the least amount of stress, strain and pain to those disabled.  Please respect it.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Boxes

Leaving bags and boxes outside the protected bins exposes their contents to the elements (wind, rain), vandals and theft.  Please place your clean, mended clothing in plastic bags that allow them to fit through the bin openings.  Your contributions lead many to the services of St. Vincent de Pau.  Thank you!

Have you reviewed your will recently?

Have you updated your Health Care Proxy?  Both documents need review in order to reflect changes in your situation or changes in your desires.  What do you want your loved ones to know?

The Vegetable Stand Is Open Sunday

The  Vegetable Stand is open Sunday after the early masses.  Veggies are grown in the Community Garden located on the back property Western end.  If you have a garden at home, why not grow a row for the hungry?  We distribute Tuesday and Thursday mornings and sell on Sunday.

THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!

We are especially thankful for all our parishioners who share our ministry through donations and the Poor Box as well as the groceries left in our Outreach Bin.
