Support for Our Mission

Support for Our Mission

Several years ago we adopted this statement as our parish mission: We change lives through the Risen Christ.  Everything we do should be shaped by that task – to call on, and rely on, the power of the Risen Christ to change lives.  We do that in worship, in care for the needy (and for our life together), and in helping young people and families to come to know and follow Christ.

Back in November when I spoke to you about our financial situation I said that these key elements of parish life – worship – care for the poor, and formation for the young – would continue, if perhaps in different form.  When it became clear that we couldn’t support our then-current way of doing things, I invited diocesan officials to consult with me about reshaping our services and our staff, while keeping our mission and key tasks in mind.  Two weeks ago I announced the decisions I had to make to reduce staff and shift services.  Now, we rebuild.  Here’s an outline that will, I hope, help you to understand our new pattern of organization for our life and mission:

The four areas in the grid above grow clearly from our mission and key tasks.  In each of them I’ve designated a “lead person” to give coherence and direction to our parish’s activities in that area.  Often (as you can see from the names in parentheses), existing ministry leaders will continue to serve their ministries directly – but now, I hope, with greater focus and coordination.  Some leadership functions had to be changed with staff changes, and over the next few months I expect that this grid will become more specific with regard to individual ministries.  But it will, I hope, give you some idea of who to call on if you want to offer your talents in a specific area of parish life, or if you have questions or concerns.

Thank you for your patience and good humor through what has been a difficult time.  I expect a few more bumps on the road as we put our new patterns into place – please be patient, and do what you can to help others to adjust and to carry our mission from Christ on.  Until next week, peace.
